The Basic Poker Varieties

Enthusiasts and non-enthusiasts alike call it the biggest contender to baseball as being America's most favorite pastime. This card game has been known to be played by almost anyone from any strata of the American society, from the blue-collar worker to the chief executive of the White House.

There are around eleven varieties of poker popularly played for their novel amendments to the standard rules. The simplest is the Showdown, where each player is dealt five cards face up. The best hand wins a fixed stake.

In Draw Poker, the player is dealt five cards face down. These make up his original hand, and an appropriate bet is made for it. He draws additional cards (usually limited to three) to improve his hand before betting any further.

To show how integral betting is in poker, Jack Pots Poker opens the betting when a player has a hand containing a pair of jacks or better. The rest of its rules is generally the same as with Draw Poker.

In Stud Poker, the manner of betting is so convenient for any resigning player to drop out of the game at any time. The first-round betting begins with the player with the highest card showing after each player is dealt two cards: one facing up and the other facing down. On the second round, another set of cards are issued face up and the one making up the highest combination showing this time opens the betting.

There are other sub-varieties of stud poker played that differ on number the cards dealt to the players, but both seeking the best hand of five cards. Five-card stud issues five cards to each of its players - four facing up, and one face down. Seven-card stud, four facing up and three face down.

The very popular Hold 'Em also involves seven cards and seeks the best five-card combination. Two hole cards are dealt to each player, that is, they come to their respective players face down. The player may use one, both, or none of them along with five community cards that are next dealt to him face up, to create the strongest hand.

Another common way of creating type of poker is employing a wild card. A wild card can be any card, usually of low denomination, that can substitute for any card in the deck. The late president and poker enthusiast Harry S. Truman was said to have created variations of the game with the use of wild cards. Dealer's Choice, Crisscross, Spit-In-The-Ocean, High-Low, Michigan, Up-And-Down, and Baseball are examples and popular testimonies about poker's flexible nature.
